2 Days in Hamburg, Germany

My time in Hamburg, Germany was short but I loved every second of it! Hamburg is full of stunning bridges, amazing coffee shops, and friendly people! We were lucky enough to see the Hamburg Rathaus, St. Nikolai Memorial, and city hall. This city, where inflatable armbands were invented, is the beginning of my Semester at Sea voyage!

Where We Stayed and How We Got Around

Over 30 students decided to stay at a giant Airbnb together to get to know each other before embarkation! This Airbnb turned out to be a luxury villa with 33 beds! There were 10 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a sauna, a bar, and more! The backyard had a two-story treehouse, a trampoline, and even a zip line. It is safe to say that we were living in luxury!

The only downside to staying here was that it took 45 minute to drive one way from Hamburg to the house. Because of this, 8 of us decided to rent a small van since it would cost much less than numerous long taxi rides.

When it came to getting around Hamburg, we parked the rental and walked through the city. We were able to take our time and enjoy the amazing architecture and scenery!

St. Nikolai Memorial

St. Nikolai is an amazing memorial in Hamburg dealing with the events of World War II from 1933-1945. During the air raids on Hamburg in 1943, St. Nikolai was destroyed leaving behind only the main tower and a few walls.

We paid 4 euros each for a ticket to the viewing tower and museum. The viewing tower is 76 meters above the ground with the very top of the spire at 147 meters. When it was finished in 1874, it was the highest church worldwide. The 360° view from the top of the tower was breathtaking! The museum is separated into four different sections – History of the church, the air raids in 1943, Operation Gomorrah, and life after the war. I highly recommend anyone visiting Hamburg to take a visit to the St. Nikolai Memorial!

Seeing the Ship

The Elbe River connects Hamburg to the North Sea. The Port of Hamburg is where our Semester at Sea voyage will begin! While we were walking around Hamburg, we decided to stop at the port to check out the ship. The MV World Odyssey will be our home for the next 4 months and it looks amazing!

Upcoming Spain Adventures

On September 15th, 2018, we will arrive in Barcelona, Spain! We will spend two days here before travelling to Valencia, Spain for another two days! In this port I will be doing 100% independent travel. A few of my friends and I have decided to sleep and travel on the ship instead of booking a hostel or travelling by train. La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is the only thing we have planned so far and have bought tickets for! Be sure to subscribe to my blog to be updated on my Spain adventures!
